This simple step-by-step guide will show you how to make a holiday ornament with a blank patch.

It’s time to decorate the Christmas tree. The holidays are just around the corner! Why not create your own ornaments to add some spice to your Christmas tree? Cross-stitching can be relaxing even if your needle and thread skills aren’t the best. Do not worry about the finished product. It is more important to focus on your intention. Handmade Christmas decorations are warm and personal. They add warmth to the tree.

This is an excellent group activity. It can take a long time to cross-stitch, so it’s fun and educational to do this with friends or a group. Bond together by sharing stories and helping each other to prepare the embroidery floss. Keep an eye out for your furry friends. Cats are fond of embroidery thread.

How To Make A Holiday Ornament With A Blank Patch

Step-by-step instructions on how to make a holiday ornament with a blank patch.

Materials

  • Mason Jar Band and Lid
  • Cross-stitch pattern
  • Blank cross-stitch patches
  • Embroidery thread
  • Embroidery needle
  • Hot glue
  • Ribbon
  • Scissors
  • Printer (optional).

Step 1: Gather Your Materials

Select your pattern. Austin Trim has a great selection of cross stitch patterns and blank cross stitch patches. You can even design your own pattern if you are extra talented. Print out the pattern that you desire so that you can work with it. Select the embroidery floss according to the pattern. No one says that you must follow the pattern exactly. I changed the color of the scarf in my penguin cross stitch because I preferred a green-and-red scarf.

Step two: Cross-stitch

Separate the floss using your pattern and the gathered floss. It can be difficult to separate the floss because it tends to tangle. Hold the strands that you want with one hand and the strands between your teeth. Use your other hand to hold all of the strands. It is best to pull it apart slowly and adjust the strands carefully between your teeth when they become too long. Be careful of any cat helpers, as cats like to play with floss while you separate it.

After your strands have been separated, thread your needle. Your cross stitch should begin in the middle. To slowly create your design, follow the pattern on the front. Find a place to work that is comfortable before you begin, as the project will be long.

Step Three: Assembling Your Ornament

After you’ve finished the pattern, grab your mason-jar lid, ring and glue gun. Also, make sure your work space is clean. You should have an adult supervise the glue gun step if you are a child. They can be very hot and burning yourself is not enjoyable. Place the patch in the middle, backside down. Glue the ring inside and out. We glued it in sections. Lifting the patch slowly, we glued a quarter of the band before pressing the patch into the ring. When doing this, be careful not to burn your fingers with the glue gun!

The patch will be protected if you glue the lid to the back. Fold your ribbon over and measure the length you want to use for hanging the ornament. This is the length of ribbon you should cut. Then, glue one side of ribbon to the lid and then the side of ring. After it has dried, carefully fold the ribbon over and glue down one side. Be sure to align your ribbon correctly! Unfortunately, when making this craft I glued the bow slightly off-center. It’s okay to make mistakes. Imperfections give the ornament a more organic feel.

Your ornament is now ready to hang on the tree.

You have made your own ornament! We have many other patterns that you can use to make ornaments or dress up your clothes if you are a cross-stitch lover like me.
